Overview
Timmons Group worked with the Town of Ashland to develop plans for a retro-fit of an existing paved parking lot to permeable pavers and restoration of an urban degraded stream. The project site is a parcel of land owned by the Town of Ashland that houses both the Ashland Police Department and Pufferbelly Park. Bisecting the two is an unsightly drainage ditch that is the storm sewer outfall of over 80 acres of urban area, and also the headwaters of Mechumps Creek, an impaired waterway in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
This project is particularly valuable because much of the drainage area to the site was developed before stormwater management was a consideration, and is presently discharged with no stormwater treatment. Conversion of the nearly 8,000 sf parking lot will result in 0.5 lbs/yr of phosphorus removal and restoration of 220 LF of drainage ditch will result in 9 lbs/year of phosphorus removal.
Timmons Group assisted the Town in obtaining funding for the project from NFWF's Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund and VA DEQ's Stormwater Local Assistance Fund.
