Overview
The City of Newport News Public Schools was interested in implementing a best management practice (BMP) within the courtyard of Sedgefield Elementary. This site was selected in October 2016 after community based design charrette was held that was part of Newport News’ Green School Grounds initiative. As a Making a Visible Difference community, the U.S. EPA provided technical assistance to the City on how to manage stormwater on school grounds.
Timmons Group was hired to evaluate, recommend, and design a BMP to be implemented within the courtyard and help mitigate standing water, localized flooding, and filter stormwater runoff. Three urban bioretention boxes with two stormwater runnels were designed in early 2019 and constructed in October 2019.
