Overview
Timmons Group provided bridge inspection services to the City of Richmond’s Parks & Recreation Department under an on-call contract with the City.
Park Bridge Inspections: Timmons Group previously evaluated 28 public pedestrian bridges in the City of Richmond in order to recommend repairs and frequency of inspection in accordance with VDOT requirements. The City’s request to perform a full safety inspection of 10 bridges, which were either put on a 12-month inspection cycle or exhibiting heavy deterioration of a critical component, was a consequence of this previous work.
These bridges consist of public park bridges intended for pedestrian or combined pedestrian and vehicular use. The bridges vary in type, including a 40-span simply-supported steel bridge, a 55-span suspended bridge, a through truss bridge, multiple steel through girder bridges, and a concrete spillway.
Timmons Group coordinated under-bridge access, scheduling for equipment and railroad flaggers, as well as obtained right of entry permits from CSX Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad. Following field inspections, Timmons Group completed a bridge safety inspection report and worked with the City to compile and review comments.
For two of the structures inspected, Timmons Group is currently coordinating with the City for construction administration for construction of repairs and routine maintenance activities. This scope includes site visits, development of repair concept sketches, coordination with Contractors, and review of Contractor submittals, shop drawings and RFIs.
