Overview
The recently completed master plan for the 80 acre North Carolina Farmer’s Market reinvents the market in a context of changing urban context and surroundings, the desire to create a sustainable funding stream for the market’s enterprise fund and to enhance the experience of those who visit the market.
The development of Dix Park immediately adjacent to the market made what was previously the “back of house” an additional front door and created an opportunity to develop underutilized land. Creating pedestrian connections between the market and Dix park is also a focus of the plan.
The master plan also identifies opportunities for development public / private partnerships which will benefit the market economically. Enhancing the visitor experience includes improving pedestrian orientation and safety, more green open space, places for events, expanded shopping and parking as well as connections to not only Dix Park and NC State’s Centennial Campus but also Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway System. Existing and historic buildings are re-purposed and land is made available for new structures and mixed-use development.
