Overview
Timmons Group designed Lakeridge Parkway which now connects U.S. Route 1 (in southern Ashland) to the I-95/ Atlee-Elmont interchange area providing a vital north-south connector roadway to help alleviate local traffic from the I-95 and Route 1 north-south corridors. Work in this corridor spanned over several years (as funding was available) over several different projects and portions of the corridor were previously constructed by VDOT and/or developers. Work on this southern leg (which connected the northern corridor to the southern corridor) was accelerated to accommodate the needs of a development that was coming to the area (Bass Pro Shops). This project was completed for the Hanover County Department of Public Work in close coordination with VDOT (funding partner). The southern extension work included design of a new four-lane divided roadway, curb and gutter roadway, utilities (water and sewer) and a new bridge over Lickinghole Creek. We teamed with STV/Ralph Whitehead Associates for the bridge and Circa~ for the Cultural Resources.
Project Highlights
This project was approximately 6,000’ in length and included new roadway on mainly new alignment as well as some widening of an existing two lane facility (2,000’ on the northern end). This project began with partnering sessions between the County, VDOT, and the property owner that the roadway was traversing through to cooperatively develop improvements within the corridor. The project had VDOT Revenue Sharing funding as well as County and developer funding. It was also coordinated with VDOT designs underway for the Lewistown Road corridor and interchange improvements at Interstate 95.
The County was receiving a lot of pressure to move this project along as a design-build project in order to ensure that one of the developer tenants could open their doors as planned. During initial consultation with the County as an on call consultant we outlined how the project could move forward as a design-bid-build and still meet the goals and objectives of the project.
