Overview
Timmons Group provided the engineering design for 3 miles of roadway improvements to support construction of a new Dominion Virginia Power Plant in Greensville, Va. The project purpose was to improve existing narrow gravel roads and extend/realign new roads to allow for large construction vehicle access to the proposed power plant site for a duration of 3+ years. These improvements also included the design of left and right turn lanes on Rt. 58 and a temporary traffic signal intended to support high volumes of construction vehicle access. The project was comprised of 4 components. First, existing Rogers Road (Rt. 605) was realigned through the site to accommodate the needs of the power plant site plan. Second, existing Radium Road (Rt. 620) was converted from a narrow gravel road to an improved, and widened, asphalt pavement roadway. Third, Radium Road was extended approximately 0.5 miles to an existing crossover on Rt. 58, including improvements to an existing Norfolk Southern railroad crossing that required the realignment with grade adjustment of Brunswick Road (Rt.607) . Finally, Rt. 58 was improved to provide left and right turn lanes with temporary signalization to facilitate access during peak construction periods. The design of these roadways included 12 detention ponds along the roadway to satisfy Virginia Stormwater Regulations, specifically energy balance at all drainage outfalls.
