Overview
As part of the Public-Private Educational Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002 (PPEA), the team of Gilbane, Cannon Design and Timmons Group was selected to design and construct the New Life Sciences Lab Building on George Mason University’s (GMU) Prince William Campus. When complete, the Life Sciences Lab Building will consists 75,000 SF and will house the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine, other University research and lab business incubator space.
To support both GMU and the Commonwealth’s commitment to sustainability this project is being designed and will be constructed to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification. Native plantings and minimal irrigation have been incorporated into the design of the landscape surrounding the state of the art building. The courtyard serves as an extension of the indoors, providing students with an engaging and natural setting in which to both study and socialize between classes. Café tables sited underneath a canopy of native shade trees offer a variety of opportunities for both individual and group interaction.
