Overview
Timmons group provided civil and environmental engineering design services on the design-build, medium security federal correctional institution at Hazelton, West Virginia. The facility will house up to 1,500 inmates in three, four-story general housing buildings. The facility includes 54,255 total gross buildable square meters in a campus plan. In addition to the general services needed to support the inmates, such as food services and laundry, the project also includes administration building, utility plant and wastewater screening building located outside of the secure compound.
As part of the design team, Timmons Group was responsible for an advanced civil package, which provided the ability to immediately begin clearing and earthwork operations after the issuance of the notice to proceed. This required the design of an accepted and approved erosion and sediment control plan. Site development and civil engineering of the project also included grading, drainage and underground utilities. Such utilities included the design and/or coordination of domestic and fire waterlines, natural gas as well as electric power and telecommunication lines in an extensive duct bank system. Construction services included construction administration responsibilities along with survey construction staking.
Timmons Group’s responsibilities also included design and construction administration services related to creation of on-site wetland and stream mitigation. The Team inherited a wetland permit which had been previously approved by the US Corps of Engineers and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. Timmons Group modified the existing permit and prepared a new mitigation plan for on-site replacement of impacted wetlands and streams, as well as construction documents for the mitigation areas.
The project was designed and is being constructed to achieve LEED NC v2.2 Silver certification.
