Overview

Midtown Green (formerly the Washington Commanders Training Camp facility and Bon Secours Training Center) is a 15-acre site in Richmond, the soon to be home to City of Richmond Parks & Recreation. Timmons Group led the design team for the original development, including programming, site selection (considering 11 different sites), and master planning for what was once Richmond’s premier sports medicine venue. The project was fast-tracked by the City, with Timmons Group successfully delivering it on schedule under an on-call contract.

The design carefully balanced the need for urban green space with the demands of a major sports training facility and a sports medicine complex. Timmons Group collaborated closely with owners, reviewers, and community members to create a multifaceted site with diverse uses across several distinct environments.

The site features three distinct zones. At the front, the Bon Secours Wellness Center, which once transformed seasonally into the Washington Commanders Training Facility, has evolved into a community-centered space. The former NFL competition fields and drill fields have been repurposed for the Parks & Rec division, providing on-site sports facilities. The site also retains its amphitheater and urban park, which continue to serve as a natural escape in the city. The park boasts over 36 species of native plants, a water feature, ADA-compliant stone walking paths, outdoor fitness equipment, and musical play equipment, making it accessible and enjoyable for all visitors.

The site is now a vibrant hub where community engagement, outdoor recreation, and public amenities converge, continuing to offer a unique experience in the heart of Richmond.
