Overview

The Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) and the City of Richmond, in partnership with the Richmond City Health District (RCHD), were awarded a Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to create a comprehensive community plan for the Jackson Ward neighborhood. This plan will serve as a roadmap for the future redevelopment of Gilpin Court and address both the challenges and opportunities within Jackson Ward.

As part of the initial phase of the Calhoun Recreation Park redevelopment in Gilpin Court and its integration into the Jackson Ward Community Plan, Timmons Group played a key role in community engagement efforts in collaboration with Storefront for Community Design. These initiatives helped envision the design of a new splash pad, partially funded through HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant.

Phase 1 park improvements include an interactive splash pad and plaza that includes a shade structure, landscaping, and site furnishings. To honor the neighborhood’s rich history, bronze plaques were proposed to commemorate local changemakers. Community members also contributed by recommending individuals who have made a lasting impact in Jackson Ward.
