Overview
Robeson County Community College’s existing burn building was constructed in 1997 and consisted of six metal cargo containers which had become unsafe after surpassing their useful life span. The new burn building was constructed on a previous site that was used for concrete disposal which had to be removed prior to the site being remediated.
In March 2017, Timmons Group teamed up with Moseley Architects, and Driven Contractors to redesign the 3,121 SF building so that it could continue to provide realistic fire training scenarios for the College’s students and community.
Timmons Group provided civil engineering services to the $1.8M two-level burn building that has an expected life span of 30 years. Timmons Group discovered that the existing water system was laid out differently than expected, so necessary field revisions were made to keep the system in working order.
The state-of- the-art building has been redesigned to accommodate demand and provide practical training to simulate realistic fire training scenarios for students. Additionally, realistic props have been added to the burn building to help create a more practical environment.
