Overview
This project involved the development of structural concepts and preliminary design for a 40-foot-long bridge and plaza structure to connect the proposed Richmond on the James Development to the soon to be constructed roundabout at Dock Street and Main Street in the City of Richmond. The bridge and plaza structure will span over a service road and an MSE retaining wall adjacent to Dock Street. The plaza’s design was complicated by the fact that it had to be designed so that it is feasible to be constructed after completion of the adjacent roadway and retaining wall. The span arrangement and supporting substructure elements were chosen to minimize impacts to MSE wall, and the slab superstructure provides a system that can be efficiently constructed and allows for adequate vertical clearance to the roadway below.
