Overview

After a magnitude-5.8 earthquake and following aftershocks struck Louisa County in August 2011, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School was left damaged and desolate. Timmons Group was eager to help the County and began evaluating the project. Since the earthquake caused severe structural damage, building a new school was the most beneficial option for moving forward. Thomas Jefferson Elementary School was designed to have a 700 student seat capacity/approximate 850 SOL capacity to house grades pre-k-5 in approx. 86,000 SF. The newly built school contains 41 classrooms, a cafeteria, gymnasium, and music, art, and multi-media rooms. There is a separate entrance for community access to facilities such as the gym, and a large courtyard in the middle for science and garden activities. A walking trail, parking improvements, sidewalks, paved play areas, service areas and drives, and bus loop were also added to the site. Timmons Group provided civil engineering, surveying and landscape architecture services for the school, which was based on the design for Moss-Nuckols Elementary School. The Moss-Nuckols plans are owned by the School Board and were seen as crucial to implement for minimizing costs associated with the project.
