68 Years Young — Timmons Group Lands on the Inc. 5000 List for the 6th Consecutive Year

Civil engineering is one of the oldest professions in recorded history. As early civilization began to form and the need for organized city layouts increased, civil engineers took to streets, sewers, and structures to design what would one day be paramount elements of ancient history. Those civil-engineered artifacts have since become cornerstones for how we design our own modern cities.

It seems to me, being that civil engineering is considered an ancient profession, that even at 68-years-old, Timmons Group is young.

Established in Richmond, Virginia in 1953, the firm has been at the forefront of civil engineering demands in the regions we serve for decades. In our 68 years, we have grown to 18 offices across 6 states, employed over 800 individuals (and increasing quickly!), offered in excess of 50 different services, and been involved in the production of 44,000 projects.

In time, landscape architecture and geospatial technology were also built into our offerings. Though these professions aren’t technically as old as civil engineering, our practices are all rooted the same ideals: Enhancing the beauty, safety, and functionality of our contemporary world.

Though I’ve just made the argument based on our chosen professions that Timmons Group is young, we’re one of the older companies to land the Inc. 5000 list repeatedly.

Inc. Magazine’s 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in America is a yearly report that investigates companies of all professions for their abilities to reach lofty goals in the business world. We were introduced to the list in 2016 and have kept up our ranking, coming in on the 2021 list at #4,696 with a growth rate of 52%… Not too shabby!

With the exception of one firm, this year’s top 10 companies were all founded between the years of 2007 and 2017. Founding years vary throughout the list, but since the report is based on percentage of growth in company size and revenue, many companies (both young and old) land the list for just two or three years, making our six consecutive years pretty notable.

Another notable feat, and along with the Inc. 5000, Timmons Group was welcomed again into this year’s Engineering News Record 500 list at #151 and Zweig Hot Firms Top 100 at #26, both leading lists that have made their mark on the AEC industry.

Though we are ranked annually on these lists, each year comes with its own challenges (particularly during these times), and we are always excited when we learn that, after 68 years, we are still keeping up with the best in the business.

If landing a rank on these nationwide top lists has taught us anything, it’s that Timmons Group is deserving of relevance in the industries we have served for decades, and we have our clients and employees to thank for that.

So, don’t let our age fool you… Timmons Group is a leading engineering, design, and technology firm with plenty of room to grow even more. As we continue to build partnerships, seek out new ventures, and employ the most revered professionals in the industries we serve, we find ourselves constantly embarking on exciting and undiscovered territory that our founder, JK Timmons, would be chomping at the bit to explore.

Celebrate with us as we share this exciting news with you, along with the reminder that 68 years doesn’t make us anything but young, experienced, vibrant, and excited for the future.
