Overview

Timmons Group worked with Stantec and Arlington Transit to plan, design, and permit the new Arlington Transit (ART) Operations and Maintenance Facility (AOMF). Located on three parcels along Shirlington Road in Green Valley, the facility includes a maintenance, operations, and administration building, along with surface parking for buses and a three-story parking structure for employee vehicles.

The 3.52-acre project site presented several challenges, including relocating a stream that bisected the properties, addressing Resource Protection Area (RPA) restrictions, coordinating phased construction, managing public and private utility relocations and extensions, and limited material laydown and construction staging areas.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on December 10 to mark the completion of the $96.6 million project. Timmons Group provided planning, survey, environmental, civil engineering, and landscape architecture services, supporting the project through various phases.

The team also provided site plan permitting with Arlington County, including wetland permitting with ACORP, civil bid and construction plans and specifications, and ongoing construction administration services. The project involved several public outreach meetings and presentations with the Transportation Advisory Committee, Green Valley Civic Association, and Public Facilities Review Committee to ensure community engagement.

As part of its sustainability efforts, the facility features the largest solar installation at any Arlington County facility, consisting of 835 solar panels.
