Timmons Group has opened its doors in Columbia, South Carolina, and we’re thrilled to welcome engineers and project managers who are looking to grow their careers alongside our team. This expansion marks the firm’s first footprint in South Carolina, and in the office to welcome new employees is Cliff Lawson, a project manager in our transportation group.
With 13 years of experience, Cliff’s expertise includes a variety of traffic engineering services, including impact analyses, traffic signal design, traffic forecasting, traffic management, and pavement marking design. He and his team work on both public and private projects, handling everything from traffic studies to large-scale roadway and signal designs.
For Cliff, the move to Columbia was driven by a desire to be closer to family while continuing his career with Timmons Group. He’s found a lot to appreciate about the City, saying, “I love the pace of it. I love the community. People are really friendly here, very down-to-earth and hard-working.”
As the capital of South Carolina, Columbia provides a good mix of professional and recreational opportunities, making it an ideal place to live and work. “There are a lot of attractions here and a good nightlife. It’s eclectic, which I like,” he says. “With music venues, museums, and local theater, you don’t have to leave Columbia to have a great time.”
Alongside his affinity for the culture, Cliff has discovered he has the resources to make a real impact locally and contribute to his community. “I’m excited to work where I live. It’s always nice to see your impact every day, and it’s very nice to finally be able to say, ‘Hey, we have an office here, and we can offer services for the greater South Carolina area, including Columbia,'” he says.
What We Look for in New Team Members
As he builds his team in Columbia, Cliff is looking for engineers who share his commitment to adaptability and growth. “I tend to look for a hard worker in an employee, but I also want them to be adaptable. I want them to be comfortable being uncomfortable,” he explains. In transportation, the work is always evolving, which allows employees to grow and expand their skills.
One of the things Cliff values most about the firm is the supportive team environment, both in person and virtually. “Whether it’s a quick check-in with another department or reaching out to our other offices, there’s always someone available to help answer questions and make our projects better,” he says. From North Carolina to South Carolina, the team’s dynamic is built on open communication, collaboration, and a real willingness to help each other succeed.
For new employees, Cliff believes Timmons Group provides the ideal mix of resources and growth potential. “There are benefits to working somewhere that’s not a small company but not a huge one, either. It offers duality, a good balance where we’re big enough to have resources we can tap into but small enough to provide growth opportunities,” he explains.
New hires can explore various areas within engineering, from traffic studies to site civil work and beyond. Whether you’re a new engineer or an experienced project manager, the Columbia office is a place to grow professionally and work on meaningful projects. “If you want to delve into roadway design or if you want to delve into site civil, those opportunities are available at Timmons,” Cliff says.
