Originally built in the 1970s, the Chickahominy Riverfront Park Fishing Pier is located in James City County, Virginia. As a result of recurrent flooding during high tides and after significant storms, coupled with the absence of ADA accessibility and considerable yearly upkeep requirements, James City County partnered with Timmons Group on a pier replacement project. This project aimed to replace the outdated structure with a new 290-foot-long pier that meets ADA standards.
Timmons Group provided engineering services for the pier replacement, which included assessing environmental factors, identifying existing pier issues, and analyzing water elevations along with assessment, design, permitting, and construction administration services.
Timmons Group’s civil and structural teams developed a plan to provide ADA Accessible parking and to elevate the pier above the Mean High Tide Water Elevation. The structural team also developed a framing plan and provided a railing that met ADA compliance. Additionally, the project included enhancements to the parking area, erosion and sediment control measures, fishing pier amenities, and a water line to service the fish cleaning table.
The project began in June 2023 and finished two months ahead of schedule in October. A ribbon cutting was held in early November to celebrate the re-opening. The new fishing pier is now accessible to all visitors and is open 24 hours a day with the addition of the new solar lighting.
