Establishing an Employee-Led Legacy: How Timmons Group Landed on the Forbes Top Employers List

In August this year, Timmons Group received notice that we had been named to the Forbes Top Employers list. Making this prestigious list of only 300 U.S.-based employers came as an exciting surprise to us, because we hadn’t submitted for it! It turns out that it was a result of the work of our dedicated employees who wanted the world to know how much they love working at Timmons Group. Being included on the list is a result of many factors, including anonymous employee surveys and nominations, employer reputation, client references, comprehensive benefits, and our online presence.

So, what exactly does the Forbes list mean, and how did we come to find ourselves at #203 this year?

With seventeen offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Southwest, Timmons Group provides civil engineering, environmental, economic development, GIS/geospatial technology, landscape architecture, and surveying services to a diverse client base.

If we take a closer look at all that makes Timmons Group unique, we see distinct talent, a culture of learning, stimulating assignments, notable projects, and a flexible family-friendly work environment. Competitive salaries and a generous benefits package strengthen the advantages we offer.

The firm’s culture is comprised of six values: Discipline, teamwork, heritage, institutional knowledge, life balance, and integrity. These values help us attain our overarching mission to achieve unparalleled understanding of our clients, their businesses, and their visions, resulting in unrivaled customer service and shared success. Our leadership team starts the client success journey by providing our teams with the resources they need to experience our values firsthand. (It’s hard to give something that you haven’t experienced yourself. That’s why we take this stuff to heart!)

Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Discipline — We understand that the success of our clients requires that we finish strong.
  2. Teamwork — We will set aside individual interests for the interests of the clients and communities that we serve.
  3. Heritage — We will value the philosophy of our firm as conceived by its founders.
  4. Institutional Knowledge — We will possess unrivaled technical knowledge and skills and an unmatched intimacy with our clients.
  5. Life Balance — We will promote a healthy balance between our work and commitment to family, faith and community.
  6. Integrity — We will be good stewards of the trust placed in us by the clients and the communities that we serve.

But we’re not just here to tout the firm’s values. We came here to thank our people who come to work every day to enhance their communities with thoughtful design, engage with ways to better themselves professionally, and provide valuable experiences for their clients.

“We wholeheartedly believe that our culture is what sets us apart, and we know that our employees are what makes the culture possible,” said Shannon Hayes, Timmons Group’s Director of Human Resources. “Cultivating a workplace culture rooted in fun, respect, collaboration, and innovation is a daily commitment, and our employees embody these values to create the Timmons Group culture every day,” she continued.

As they say, birds of a feather flock together… And we have some amazing birds who communally make Timmons Group the firm it is. They’re good people, with varying interests, backgrounds, and career goals. Luckily, they all flew to us, and we’re grateful that they call Timmons Group their career home.

As we think back to why we were named to the Forbes Top Employers list this year, it’s evident that it’s because our employees mirror the goals we have set for the firm, with the biggest one of all being to create lasting impact on our people, our clients, and our communities.

In that, Timmons Group celebrates more than just a numerical rank—we celebrate a legacy.

“Our legacy is a collective achievement driven by the investment of our employees,” Shannon said. “Recognitions like the Forbes list help us continue to retain our current employees and attract future talent, both of which are invaluable to our company culture and the legacy our employees create every day.”
