Water Under the Bridge — Our Structure Team’s Trip to Guantanamo Bay

Timmons Group worked with RQ Construction, LLC and Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) to rehabilitate a two-span steel bridge with a timber deck over the Guantanamo River that was originally built in the 1940s.

Located on Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, the bridge supports the transportation of military patrol traffic, including armored trucks that weigh approximately 21 tons, which is about four times the weight of a standard flatbed truck.

Our Richmond structural team designed and developed a unique process in which the bridge’s beams were removed and rehabilitated off-site. The team designed temporary piers to support the bridge during demolition and reconstruction so the bridge’s beams could be rehabbed over land, which is safer and more efficient than conducting the work over water.

Gary Johnson and Harrison Figan, engineers on our Richmond structural team, visited the bridge in May to observe the construction process and assist with any questions the contractor had. The Project is ahead of schedule and slated to be complete in the Fall of 2023.
