Timmons Group Renewable Energy Team Surpasses 1GW of Operating Clean Energy Design

Richmond, VA – March 20, 2023 – Timmons Group, a leading engineering and technology firm, announced today that its Virginia-based renewable energy civil engineering team has surpassed 1GW AC of operating clean energy design in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States regions. 1GW of electricity is 1 billion watts, which is roughly enough power to feed 750,000 homes.

Timmons Group established its renewable energy practice seven years ago at its Richmond, Virginia headquarters. The Virginia civil engineering renewables team specializes in supporting its clients through the Virginia stormwater regulation process, including erosion management and sediment control.

In addition to the firm’s investment in taking measurable action to support environmental stewardship, Timmons Group implements in-house environmentally conscious design for its clients, which Chris Dodson, the practice’s leader, says is a deliberate effort. “In our renewable energy practice, we provide in-house expertise across disciplines that make it easy for our clients to advance their projects through what is often a years-long process,” Dodson said.

Timmons Group has developed deep-seated relationships with many industry-leading developers and EPCs (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction firms) in the renewable energy space. Apex Clean Energy of Charlottesville, Virginia has been a longstanding client of Timmons Group.

“Apex has worked with Timmons Group on engineering, surveying, and environmental permitting at wind and solar projects across the country and applauds [the team] on reaching this 1GW milestone in the energy transition,” said Jimmy Merrick, Apex Senior Development Manager. “We look forward to advancing more projects through design and construction both in the Commonwealth and nationwide with Timmons [Group’s] expertise.”

Thanks in part to the increased demand for clean energy solutions, Timmons Group’s renewables practice has experienced significant growth in recent years. As clean energy began to make an appearance in Virginia, the Richmond-based firm worked on several of the first solar projects in the state with Strata Clean Energy.

“Timmons has been a valuable partner for Strata’s success in Virginia. They have supported our civil, survey, and environmental needs from our first 26 MW DC project in Virginia in 2016 to our current portfolio of four projects totaling 613 MW AC. I would highly recommend their experienced and attentive team to support [any] development, permitting or construction needs,” said Brent Niemann, Director of Civil Engineering at Strata Clean Energy of Durham, North Carolina.

“This milestone reflects a significant achievement for our team and their dedication to providing sustainable energy solutions while promoting environmental stewardship. We are proud to work on so many green energy projects in our backyard across the Commonwealth,” Timmons Group president and CEO Brian Bortell said.

In addition to 1GW of projects currently operating, Timmons Group’s teams have permitted and designed more than 3.5GW of clean energy design and have another 662MW currently under construction. The operations have also expanded to Charlotte, NC and Plano, TX where additional wind, solar, and BESS storage projects are permitted and designed.
