ICYMI: Hoover Road Athletic Park Groundbreaking

Calling all Durham residents – the City “turned the dirt” on the Hoover Road Athletic Park last week! Located at 632 North Hoover Road and weighing in at 50 acres, this is Durham’s largest park project in over 10 years. The athletic park will be home to four full size natural turf soccer/multipurpose fields with additional amenities to include a maintenance and restroom building with concrete plaza, a playground and shelter, food truck hook ups, and walking trails around the park. The Hoover Road Athletic Park will provide a large recreational opportunity in the eastern portion of Durham – where currently only one soccer field exists at Twin Lakes Park.

On this glorious day, though muddy due to rain during the ceremony, Mayor Steve Schewel gave a short speech to a small, socially distanced, group about how important this athletic park is to the community. He mentioned that the surrounding residents are predominately Latinx and were wanting more fields. This athletic park will alleviate some of the use of the field at Twin Lakes Park and provide more residents the opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Construction is slated to be completed in Fall of 2021, a mere 13 months from now! The project is currently on time and within budget and Timmons Group provided landscape architecture, site design, water/wastewater engineering, stormwater management, environmental services, geotechnical engineering, and surveying services for this new park.
