Celebrated annually on the 4th Sunday of September, this upcoming Sunday is World Rivers Day. This international event celebrates the world’s waterways and the importance of keeping our rivers and other water resources clean and healthy. In honor of World Rivers Day, we’re highlighting some of the services performed by our Stormwater and Environmental groups that support water quality and environmental stewardship within our community.

Eroded stream and river banks can contribute to high levels of sediment and other nutrients entering a water supply. These nutrients are essential for plant health but cause adverse ecological effects when excess levels are present in the water. To reduce these harmful nutrient levels and increase vegetation and water quality, a stream restoration/mitigation is conducted. Timmons Group’s Stream Team has restored over 20 miles of streams and provides consulting, design, construction oversight and monitoring of wetland and stream restoration/mitigation projects of all sizes for public and private sector clients.

Aquatic vegetation infestation and other health problems within ponds and lakes can cause wildlife depletion and water quality issues. Our Environmental Group offers a wide range of services to resolve these issues including water quality evaluation, aquatic weed and algae control, nutrient management, fish stocking, dredging plans, and more. These aquatic management strategies ensure long-term success and rejuvenated health for the pond and its wildlife habitat.

Constructed wetlands are artificial wetlands designed to improve water quality using vegetation and filter beds to create a natural filtration process for wastewater and stormwater runoff. This biofiltration process removes pollutants and contaminants and can also create a habitat for wildlife. Timmons Group has designed constructed wetlands and other stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) for a wide variety of clients. Most recently, our Mulberry Run Constructed Wetland (pictured above) was the winner of a Best Urban BMP in the Bay Award (BUBBA) for Best Habitat Creation in a BMP and was named a recognized project in the EPA PISCES program.
