Mooresville High School, located in Mooresville, NC, is starting off the 2019 school year with a new 116,000-square-foot addition for athletics and performing arts.
The athletic wing of the facility features physical education rooms, team locker rooms, classrooms, and a brand-new gymnasium that seats 2,200. The performing arts wing features a 1,600-seat auditorium and additional spaces for chorus, band, drama, and art.
Timmons Group provided survey & utility location, geotechnical site investigation, Phase I ESA, stream and wetland determination and confirmation, and civil/site design for the addition to Mooresville High School.
Safe transportation for students was a major part of this project. The site was bisected by Magnolia Street, a frequent crossing area for students. Timmons Group worked closely with the DOT and local transportation officials to design safe crossing areas along the street.
The new addition required removing the school’s existing baseball field. Timmons Group developed an early site package to construct a new baseball field prior to removing the existing field so that playing time was not disrupted. The school also purchased several residential properties that eventually became the expanded parking lot for the new building. During demolition, Timmons Group worked with the local fire department to use the existing houses for training and they completed a controlled burn at each of the properties.
