With over 10,000 vehicles traveling along the corridor every day, Atlee Road in Hanover County has been extended into a 4-lane divided roadway from the existing cul-de-sac in the Rutland Commons Shopping Center to Atlee Station Road which has transformed the area near Atlee High School. The extension now provides an important link to drivers between US Route 301 and the I-95/Atlee-Elmont interchange from surrounding residential neighborhoods and schools in the area.

The extension provides the County’s residents with a convenient and accessible connection that allows people and goods to move more efficiently and effectively than before. The extension and road system was designed to ensure safety in the area while enhancing mobility in the suburban and residential areas all while maintaining the character and cultural resources of the County.

Features of the project include a new bridge over the Buckingham Branch Railroad, an underpass tunnel to allow vehicles to pass through, and a new traffic signal at Atlee Road/Atlee Station Road. Sidewalks and bicycle lanes were also created for pedestrians to utilize along the corridor.

This new vital link between Route 301 and Route 637 fulfills the County’s Major Thoroughfare Plan network for the area and will improve the overall quality of life for Hanover County citizens and businesses in the area for years to come.

Timmons Group provided the overall roadway design and administration support services for this $15 million project that was recently selected as a winner of the 2019 Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA) Engineering Awards Program.
