Back to School: Surveying our School Experience

Summer is winding down and temperatures are beginning to drop which can only mean one thing – back to school season is upon us! In honor of the 2019 school year, we’re taking a look at several of the K-12 and university projects we’ve surveyed and the impact these projects have on students and communities alike.

Northside Elementary School

Let’s be real, everyone’s favorite part of the school day is getting to play outside! Timmons Group provided surveying services to the 100,000 SF Northside Elementary School in Chapel Hill, NC. The school’s design encourages outdoor play and education through its open play areas, vegetated roof garden, previous play surfacing, art patio, outdoor dining area, and terraced outdoor garden. Northside Elementary School was the first LEED Platinum elementary school in North Carolina.

Discovery STEM Academy

One of the first of its kind in the country, Discovery STEM Academy in Newport News, VA is a unique magnet elementary school rooted in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Timmons Group provided all site/civil engineering and surveying services to the 10-acre school site. Timmons Group worked with the architect and owner to provide specialty learning areas consisting of an outdoor amphitheater, garden areas to grow vegetables for the cafeteria, and a rain garden.

Huguenot High School

Ready for football season? We provided topographic surveying and full civil engineering design for the new Huguenot High School in Richmond, VA. Part of this project included a 3,500-seat football stadium with artificial turf. If football isn’t your thing, the project also included new baseball and softball facilities and a 2,000-seat gymnasium.

North Carolina State University Wolf Village Transit Stop

Many college students utilize campus bus services like North Carolina State University’s Wolfline Bus System to get to and from classes. Timmons Group was tasked with reconfiguring the Wolf Village Transit Stops and consolidating them to a central location to improve student safety in and around this area. Timmons Group developed construction documents including demolition/ construction staging, staking plan, grading and drainage plans, and construction administration services to the new transit stops.

George Mason University

Improving the water quality of streams and waterways located on college campuses increases biodiversity, reduces pollution, and provides a scenic and relaxing place for students to enjoy. Timmons Group has held an on-call contract with George Mason University for survey, civil, and environmental engineering services since 2010. Surveying has been provided to several projects under this contract including the restoration of a segment of Rabbit Branch located on the Fairfax Campus. Topographic surveying was provided for the 320 linear feet of stream restoration located on the southern side of campus.

This stream restoration project reduced the amount of harmful materials in the stream including phosphorous, nitrogen, and total suspended solids, and greatly increased the overall health of the channel. Learn more about Timmons Group’s Land Surveying Services here.
