Richmond’s East End is getting ready to welcome its newest community grocery store, The Market @ 25th. Participants of Timmons Group’s April Commercial Coffee event toured the store, which will bring fresh and affordable food options to the area that has long been classified as a food desert.
The grocery store and mixed-use center is located at the intersection of 25th Street and Fairmount in Church Hill. The mixed-use center, which is anchored by The Market @ 25th grocery store, also includes commercial space and a 42-unit apartment complex called The Flats @ 25th.
With a mission to serve the community, The Market @ 25th is dedicated to hiring from within the neighborhood and developing partnerships with local food growers and producers. So far, the market has hired and trained 70 employees from the community. To support community health, Hope Pharmacy will be located within the store and a VCU Health Hub will be attached to the store to provide health screenings and education to the public. The Market @ 25th is also partnered with the PBS KIDS Ready to Learn program, which will provide educational opportunities and events to teach children the importance of healthy eating.
Both Lyft and Van Go, Inc. will assist with transportation, offering discounted rides to those who may need a ride to and from the store.
All the store’s aisles and production spaces are named after local schools, churches, and neighborhoods. Historic photos can be found decorating the walls throughout the space. To further support their mission to serve the community, the end cap of many store aisles will feature a space for local goods.
Hourigan began construction in 2017 on the 27,000 SF grocery store and 8,500 SF retail space. The design team for the mixed-use center included architect, Freeman Morgan Architects and general contractor, Hourigan. Capstone Contracting worked directly with the market on the interior construction and design of the space. Timmons Group provided site/civil design, planning/layout, landscape architecture, survey, construction materials testing, environmental, and geotechnical services for the project. The Market @ 25th is expected to open next week.
In addition to The Market @ 25th, Commercial Coffee has toured several other exciting Richmond region projects including Richbrau Brewing Co., The Goodwyn at Union Hill, Tang & Biscuit, Tabol Brewing, Richmond Volleyball Club, Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Richmond, the GRTC Pulse, and Barber Martin Agency. The goal of our Commercial Coffee series is to connect with the community and educate our guests on new projects that are shaping the future of our city.
