The Route 10 at Branders Bridge Road Right Turn Lane project located in Chesterfield County, Virginia is a great example of how a need within a community can be accomplished quickly through early and frequent communication with the client.
County funds were earmarked to enhance the existing deficient paved shoulder taper to a full 400’ right turn lane. With a rise in traffic on Route 10 and the proximity to Carver College and Career Academy, the need for a safe right turn lane was critical. Timmons Group worked with VDOT and County staff diligently to go from the start of design through the completion of construction in just 12 months!
Timmons Group took three steps in order to fast track this project:
1.) First, we coordinated with private utilities and the County’s Department of Public Utilities at the onset of the project to determine what potential impacts there may be. The roadway design was then adjusted to eliminate all utility relocations.
2.) Second, we reduced right of way impacts to only two properties which were owned by the county and the commonwealth. The right of way acquisition on these two properties were done concurrently with design development, effectively eliminating the need for a standalone right of way acquisition phase.
3.) Lastly, Timmons Group worked with VDOT and County staff to prepare the bid documents while the design was being finalized. As soon as plan approval was received from VDOT and the county, the project was in the position to be advertised. The end result was a safe right turn lane delivered ahead of schedule and within budget.
